State rules

The state fire code comes first. The local chapters sit beside it.

The New Jersey Uniform Fire Code (N.J.A.C. 5:70) governs a building in use and applies to every building except owner-occupied one- and two-family homes. Life Hazard Uses are registered with the state Division of Fire Safety and inspected on the state's schedule. Every other use the fire code applies to is registered with the municipality under its local fire-prevention ordinance and inspected by the local fire official. The use decides which list a building goes on. The owner does not choose.
